Construction Dust Awareness
This course is designed to help workers understand and avoid the serious health risks associated with construction dusts.
Although the course makes reference to UK regulations, the information provided would be useful to anyone aiming to improve their knowledge of construction dust, it's associated risks and control measures.
HSE Construction Health Inspection Initiative – October 2020 |
The period 5 - 30 October will see HSE carrying out its latest construction health inspection initiative.
"Inspectors will also be looking for evidence of employers and workers knowing the risks, planning their work and using the right controls. If necessary, they will use enforcement to make sure people are protected." - HSE

Can I tailor the course to my company specific needs?
YES. We really recommend this!
1 - Demonstrate Leadership:
Your Managing Director or Health and Safety Manager etc. can provide a video introduction to send the message direct to the workforce.
Here, Stephen Euston the Managing Director of Manning Construction Limited introduces the Asbestos Awareness Course (the same can be done for the Construction Dust Awareness course) as part of their MATS (mandatory annual training scheme) - 6 courses produced for Manning Construction by the PCR Training Team.

2 - Evidence 'Beyond Compliance':
Producing robust, tailored, risk based in-house certificates as part of your training program will assist during your ISO, Achilles, CHAS etc. audits.

3 - Reduce Costs:
We can reduce the cost further if you purchase multiple licenses.
Why take this Course?
UK HSE:
Construction workers have a high risk of developing these diseases because many common construction tasks can create high dust levels. Over 500 construction workers are believed to die from exposure to silica dust every year.
The amounts needed to cause this damage are not large. The largest amount of silica someone should be breathing in a day after using the right controls is shown below next to the penny.
What you should know
Regularly breathing construction dust can cause diseases like:
- Lung cancer (nasal cancer from hardwood)
- Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and
- Silicosis.
Construction workers have a high risk of developing these diseases because many common construction tasks can create high dust levels.
Dusts can cause the following diseases:
Lung cancer
The inhalation of silica particles within construction dust promotes the development of pulmonary fibrosis that over prolonged periods increases the risk of lung cancer.
Wood dust is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a 'definite' human carcinogen. Markedly higher risks of sinonasal cancer (carcinoma of the nasal cavity and associated air sinuses) have been found in workers exposed occupationally to this agent.
|
Asthma
Asthma is a very serious health problem that can ruin lives.
Asthma can be caused in a workplace simply by breathing in certain dusts, gases, fumes and vapours that can damage your lungs.
|
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
COPD is a major cause of disability and death, thousands of people die each year from work-related lung diseases and in many cases due to exposures that took place many years before. COPD describes a number of breathing problems where there is damage to the breathing tubes and air sacs within the lung. Breathing in certain dusts, fumes, chemicals or gases in the workplace can cause serious long term lung damage.
|
Silicosis
Silicosis is a long-term lung disease caused by inhaling large amounts of crystalline silica dust, usually over many years. Silica is a substance naturally found in certain types of stone, rock, sand and clay. Working with these materials can create a very fine dust that can be easily inhaled. (NHS)
